La velada del sapo
site-specific performance
OSSMO, Guadalajara, México
2023
In May 2023 we gathered to made this sort of performance.
It was built on four situations:
1) sound and body performers were distributed over different rooms of an apartment and were told to improvise within their assigned places.
2) It was late at night, dark, and all the lights were off.
3) Some hand lamps were given to the audience and were invited to freely move around the space and illuminate whoever or whatever seems appropriate.
4) The ending was left unwritten, subject to the collective consensus.
When everybody is listening a community can be born out of thin air.
We were thinking about everyday movements, spaces and sounds.
We were thinking about experiencing them through the perception of a newborn.
We were thinking about seeing, about being seen, and having the capacity to decide to see.
We were thinking about the difference of seeing or watching (in Spanish is better understood: ver o vigilar).
About sound and how it changes our perception of space and vice versa.
About listening and what it means: an awareness of movement.
Listening and seeing precede any conscious action.
What does it means to be complicit?
What is my limit of agency in a situation?
Who is complicit?
Where does my judgement come from?
When am I being complicit?
We were thinking about the austere.
How communal poetry could be born out of mere movement: on body, sound, or light.
